A non-profit for girls · sport and STEM, together

Sport is the way in.

Girls get told to pick: the sporty one or the smart one, the athlete or the coder. We say she can be both. The Nush Project uses the sport she already loves, whether it's football, netball, badminton or basketball, as a way into AI, coding and teaching, and shows her the two belong together.

Our mission

You don't have to pick.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of girls hear that sport and "nerdy" things don't mix. So they drop one. Usually it's the coding, the maths, the tech.

The Nush Project is built on the opposite idea: the intersection is real, and it's a great place to be. A girl who argues about whether a shot was in or out is already thinking like a data scientist. We take the sport she cares about and use it to open doors into technology, learning and new interests, without asking her to give anything up.

Our projects

One idea. Many doors.

01

Sport → AI & code

Through our work with Code AI, we use sport to teach girls how technology works. Our first project, AI Ref, has players train an AI referee, so they learn how AI really thinks by doing it themselves.

02

Sport → the classroom

We go into classrooms and teach younger girls, using sport to make new ideas click. A lesson about AI or data lands differently when it starts with a game she already plays.

  • Sessions led by older girls
  • Lessons that start with sport
  • Works with or without devices

AI Ref: Train Your Own AI Referee

A free game that teaches kids how AI really learns, no experience needed.

Can you teach an AI to make a fair call? In AI Ref, kids become AI trainers: they teach a friendly robot referee, Ref-Bot, to judge whether a badminton shot lands IN or OUT. Instead of just using AI, they build it, showing Ref-Bot examples, testing what it learned, and fixing it when it gets things wrong.

Across five quick levels they discover how AI learns from examples, why it needs diverse data to stay fair, and why AI still needs people to check it. Built to run on low-cost phones and low-bandwidth connections, in English and Hindi, with a no-technology classroom version for schools without devices.

Free. No sign-up. English and Hindi. Ages 8 to 11.

How it connects

Hook. Explore. Pass it on.

  1. HookStart with whatever sport she already cares about.
  2. ExploreUse it to open a door into AI, code, teaching or something new.
  3. Pass it onOlder girls bring it back to younger ones in the classroom.

Why "Nush"

Started by a player.

The Nush Project was founded by Anusha Schonfeld, an athlete who also writes code, and who never saw why she should have to choose between the two.

Everything here, from the AI projects to the classroom sessions, comes from that: showing girls that sport and STEM can live in the same person. It's run by young people, for young people, and it's just getting started.
